About the Positivus Festival
The positivus festival is a three day summer music and cultural festival held every year at Salacgrīva, Latvia from 2007 to 2019. Now the festival will be held in the capital city of Riga from 2022 onwards. This is because the last two festivals have been canceled as a result of Covid-19. Positivus is a national and international multi-genre music festival. It takes place in July each year and 2021 was to be the festival’s 12th edition but it got postponed. This is the largest music festival in the Baltic States.
Positivus endorses a lineup of established stars worldwide and also sets a stage for the new creative trendsetters that are now emerging. There are a variety of genres involved in this festival like indie, pop, folk, electronic and more styles. It is organized by Positivus Music and is held during the extended weekend. This is from Thursday afternoon till Sunday morning of the third week of July. Positivus is the largest music and arts festival in the Baltic states happening in the mid of July.
Performances at the Festival
The popularity of this celebration is rising in Europe. International chart toppers and upcoming talents come over in this holiday location to showcase their skills. It has also been named as the “Best European Festival” due to its growing popularity. This is unlike many other music festivals for it is more friends and family oriented unlike the loud partying of teenagers. For the past few years almost 30,000 people have been attending the Positivus festival. The coastal town of Salacgrīva is the location for this festival that lays over forests, meadows and also a beach.
Zvejnieku Park is also a luscious natural site near the Estonian border. This is a wonderful spot for a festival with beaches and woodlands around. There are upto 6 live stages that feature 60-70 artists on average per year. Some of these are Pixies, Ellie Goulding, Alt-J, The Lumineers, John Newman, Placebo and Hot Chip. Others include M83, Iggy Pop, Air, Elbow, Daughter, Tom Odell and Bastille. The Kooks, Kraftwerk, Imagine Dragons, The XX, Sigur Rós, Hurts, OK Go, Muse etc. The lineup includes Latvian and Estonian artists majorly with other foreign musicians participating eagerly as well. The festival is held just 12 km away from the Latvian-Estonian border. This is why there is a strong presence of Estonian visitors, musicians, caterers and travelers. This is like an unofficial yearly meeting of the two neighboring countries. Hence it is name as “Estonia’s biggest music festival in Latvia.”
2022 Positivus Festival
The 2022 festival got cancel due to the pandemic. However the major line-ups were pre-shortlisted to be A$AP Rocky, Megan Thee Stallion and Jamie xx. Caribou, SoFaygo, Moses Sumney, black midi, New Road, Bas, and great local artists ansis, Black Country and Citi Zēni were include. Arturs Skutelis, Sudden Lights, rolands če, Edavārdi, Prusa X, Būū, Sigma, MUUD, Elizabete Gaile, ZEĻĢI, $ourJ etc too.
This was to be the first time that the Positivus festival was to be hold in a new location – Riga, Lucavsala on July 15th and 16th. The main media partner of the festival is LMT who offer to purchase festival tickets on the previous “winter-price.” This was for 4 days – until Sunday, March 27th, using code LMT + POSITIVUS. Megan Thee Stallion, a great hip-hop star and global musician phenomenon was set to perform on the main stage at Positivus festival on Friday, July 15th. Her many achievements include winning a Grammy award three times. This is for the“Best Rap Artist”, “Best Rap Performance”, “Best Rap Song” with “Savage.”
Moreover, Jamie xx creates a great mix of fine indie, R&B and tasteful dance music. She is well knows around the world as a core member of The xx. His performance is the most awaited one in summer festivals. He is accurately knows as the most sought-after remixer for such artists as Adele, Florence + The Machine, and Gil Scott-Heron. Jamie xx released his debut album in 2015.
This was name as “In Color” with songs like “Loud Places”, “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” and “Gosh”. Later on in 2020 he dropped his latest single “Idontknow.” This was all managed while he was busy carrying other responsibilities. They included DJ:ing, remixing, producing and working on new material with The xx.
Some suggestions for attending the festival
At the positivus festival you can arrive via plane as the earnest airport to the spot is Riga. This is about 120 km away. The festival also accommodates its visitors by running a shuttle service through the Riga city center and the festival. Now you only need to make a short ride on the bus numbered 22 to move into the city. Apart from this you also have the option to take a taxi from the airport or the Riga city center directly to the festival. You can catch the bus from most major Latvian cities. They stop in Salacgrīva being Salacgrīvas autoosta.
There are no specific age restrictions but it may be helpful to be aware of some important facts. Children under age 10 can attend the festival for free. This is applicable only if a legal adult guardian with a valid festival ticket is attending with them. Children who are above the age of 10 need to pay for a full ticket price. An adult has to be present with children under age 16 at all times possible. Food and drink is strictly not allow at the Positivus festival site.
Although there are a number of ATMs available on the site, you will have to pay for using them. If you wish to drive your car to arrive then there will be parking facilities available for you. The amenities here include information desks if you need any guidance, first aid and water stations. Food courts and toilets are build in the venue for the Positivus festival.
